What is this concept?
This technique is useful as it significantly saves space especially for large files or storage achieves such as backing up files or spreadsheets. However, a program or software is needed in order to compress and decompress the files into a usable form. Sometimes it is referred to as coding as it encodes files into a more manageable form. It works by squeezing any sort of data (images, video, files) into a compressed format (ZIP, ARC) for storage and then decompressing it when it is needed. Although there is a variety of compression techniques, one main type of technique has been standardised by the CCITT.
Types of compression
There are many types of compression. Two main types include: lossless and lossy.
Lossy compression techniques remove some of the data which is deemed redundant. It is mostly used by video compression methods. However, not all data is able to be compressed with lossy methods certain data and programs must use the lossless method. The lossy method to compress images into mathematical expressions can also be referred to as wavelet compression. This method requires a transform which separates the important data and the insignificant data before compression the former and discarding the latter.
Lossless methods of compression ensure that no data is lost. However, they are unable to compress the file as much with a maximum compression of about 50%.
