For example, if there was a .jpeg file which is an image, an image viewing program would attempt to open it instead of say, an audio program. It is able to associate your file with a particular program and is mainly for program recognition. Some can be compatible with various programs while others are executable, meaning that when they are run, they are able to start a program or run a script. Although they direct the file to a specific program, they do not change the type of file itself.
