Hardware wise, there are many devices which have the capabilities to store data including video, audio, text files and many more. There are also two main ways that data storage can be classified in: Primary or Secondary and many types of storage methods. Here are some common storage devices and methods:

The reason that there is such a range of storage devices, is that some have different properties than others and are more favourable in certain situations. For example, USBs are small and portable but they are only able to carry a limited about of data. However, their portability makes them widely used by the general public and especially students.
New technology is also constantly replacing older ones. For example, floppy disks used to be widely used but then CDs and DVDs replaced them with superior storage capabilities. Now USBs have become the most prominent storage device. Older devices were also unable to stand head and used different methods to read the data which were less efficient. Floppy disks used to use electromagnetic methods of reading the data. However CDs and DVDs read it optically with lasers so that the disk is not damaged as easily. Information can be more densely packed and it has a longer life span. The data they stored in floppy disk were also in low quality and resolution. Additionally, the magnetic impression lost its effect over time.
